Lazuli

It was the scratching that woke him. Not knocking, as one could expect so late at night if the horses had got out or the dog had been chasing a neighbour's sheep, but a light scraping tap that shivered down his spine. A shadow passed by the entrance to the room and melted swiftly into the black of the door. He heard the scrape of the bolt as it was drawn back slowly and carefully in answer to the persistent tap, then lowered voices, urgent hisses, the words smothered in the night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fourteen years ago, the ruling disnerenti of Ibnaket were assassinated, their murderer styling himself leader in their place. In a time when any threat to the rule is crushed, Avalin and his father find themselves fleeing their remote village, fearing for their lives.
Elsewhere, Rena is fighting to keep her sanity as strange things inexplicably happen to her, disturbing her previously normal life.

Sweet-heartS

This story is set in the idyllic Marlborough Sounds where a young mother of two leads a rather mundane life. Her delightful, but troubled daughters are struggling to get to grips with having been abandoned by their father. Through a strange twist of fate, the mother's plans for the day are disrupted and she meets a stranger who changes all their lives in ways they could never imagine. True love never runs smooth and for a while it looks like the affair is one sided, until a dark spectre from his past is revealed and dealt with. After that the whirlwind romance blossoms, and wedding bells peel, after what many fear is an indecently short affair, but time proves their love was built on a rock solid foundation.
The girl's new stepfather gives them all the love they crave and by introducing them to the joys of sailing, opens up new avenues of adventure for them. Initially their sailing is within the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, where they embark on a series of 'Swallows and Amazons' style adventures. A school lesson about the French nuclear testing at Moruroa angers the young admirers of nature's bounty, which they have quickly learned to appreciate and value. They are determined to try and do something about it. Despite the inevitable setbacks they do sail, not amidst the official protest fleet but under a cloud of secrecy. Eventually they are arrested along with the rest of the protesters and taken to an atoll, which serves as a military base. There the girls reveal the mischievous side of their persona, and create havoc for their capturers.
With appetites wetted by their first offshore cruise, the girls embark upon a futile search for another yacht, one in which they can fulfil their dream of sailing around the world. When all hopes of finding a suitable craft, seem to be exhausted, their dream-ship appears, and in their inimitable way they create a rift between the seller and his fiancee, but once she meets the impulsive duo she realises that her lover's dubious tales are indeed true.
The tale concludes with the parents becoming overdue on a coastal passage, during a storm, and the girls set sail in search of them, but a small broken teak hatch cover is all that is ever found, but from that meagre remnant, they manage to reconstruct their parent's final hours, much to the amazement of the search and rescue services.

Tar Babe's Quest

Sapphire was a typical 14-year old, downtrodden by an uncaring society, with no goals or ambitions. One day her father takes her for a days outing with a difference, but neither of them had any idea of the repercussions of what they were embarking on. Sapphire only accepted because the alternative was yet another day of boredom. That outing gave her a fleeting glimpse of a different lifestyle, more imagined than experienced, but one that she instantly knew she had to become a part of. That incurable disease, 'Sea Fever' had inflicted her, and consequently her fate was sealed. She tried to break into the elite circle of seafarers, but its members did not want to know her. An obviously under age girl, spelt trouble, and couldn't possibly have anything worthwhile to offer. There was one who was not so averse though, a despicable, bitter old sea dog, cut down by a stroke, prone to outbursts of frustration, who saw in her a reflection of his own youth. Eventually the barrier she had built around him, cracked a little, revealing a glimpse of what she was seeking, but never expected to find there, of all places. They were chalk and cheese, bound by a common love of the sea. He taught her the skills she needed, encouraged her impossible dream, and quietly laid the foundations that would ensure her aspiration would not just be possible, but would be her unavoidable destiny.
She learned, though was not knowingly taught, patience, dedication, humility, as well as seamanship, navigation, and skills hereto unimagined. She learned to chip away at seemingly impossible tasks, with calm quiet confidence until she achieved her goal, and to understand and meet the needs of fellow human beings. Despite the hard physical and mental toil required, she revelled in what she considered an idyllic lifestyle in which she found complete happiness, something few of us ever achieve. All this came to a shattering end, when not one but two tragedies struck, in quick succession, driving her to the brink of suicide. Only her strength of character, and her perceived responsibility to her mentor, pulled her through. She does achieve her goal, how could she not? Not only fulfilling her own dream, but by proxy that of her benefactor too. As a final twist, the supernatural brings an unexpected development to her life, and like all good fairytales, everyone lives happily ever after. In short, this is more a book of achievement, than a sad reflection on the life shattering results of stroke, and so it should be. Why dwell on suffering and misery, when we should be seeking and embracing what positive joy, we can in this sad world of ours?

The Mobius Twist

The Mobius Twist is speculative science fiction, with a plitico/social content, set in New Zealand.
During a kayaking holiday, on the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, a group of friends take shelter in an old tunnel. It proves to be ancient and disused, but they get a sense of recent occupancy. Subtle forces gide them to a strange vehicle, which delivers them to a site of low gravity. The moon? A small humanoid awaits them. A Zerkzes.

A mobius loop is an odd form, with less than normal dimensions. Could it contain a convenient means for travel between planets?

The Smuggler's Daughter

A small inconspicuous Baltic Trader gets wrecked on a remote part of the English south coast, but how did she drift so far from her course? This is the first of a number of mysteries peppering the pages of this book, which are in time unravelled. From this lacklustre beginning emerges a fascinating tale of love intrigue espionage and of course smuggling. When we talk of smugglers, its hardy fishermen, with rough salt hardened hands, and knurled weather-beaten faces marred by constant exposure to the elements, that we think of, and most of them were cast in that mould, but all those rugged souls were mere pawns in a clever chess game, directed by a sweet, dumpling of a girl, beautiful, feminine, soft spoken, but an amazingly competent sailor, whose skills at the helm of her beautiful always immaculate, yacht, quickly secured the admiration of all who encountered her.
The main thread of this story traces the all to short life and exploits of this bright, quick witted girl, who lived only to sail, an unheard of exploit for a young girl in the late 1800's. Perhaps it was her charm as much as her obvious proficiency as a sailor, that endeared her to all who encountered her, from the rough fishermen/smugglers to their dashing arch rivals - the revenue men, who could never have begun to imagine her true motives for befriending them.
This fascinating tale covers the lead up to, the foundation of, and the resurrection of, the clandestine "Association of Traders."
Tracing the all too short life and brutal seemingly pointless murder of its instigator, then proceeds to unravel another perplexing, mystery. Alongside this amazing biography, is the tale of the early efforts to introduce science into what at the time was the art of boat design. In short this fascinating historical document, is also a love story, incorporating a mystery or two, which despite its technicalities should find a wide audience, not just among the sailing fraternity, but, thanks to its included glossary, amongst the romantics and those looking for a tale with a difference.
