| This was my first encounter with the author. I read the first chapter, then ordered the whole book and spend two almost sleepless nights in order to follow our heros. As I am German, I abolutely enjoyed some of the names in there, including the Generals and the Regenbogen - Fun! All characters are well developed, a great plot and a living, breathing world full of great ideas and unique characters - including the supportong crew. Every now and then, the style of the book reminds me of the nightrunner series. Maybe a bit too careful regarding the 'closer contact' of the couples but the development is believable, true and the world is abolutely worth visiting. Thank you! |

| This was well written and edgy. I liked the control of the author throughout the first chapter but also felt a few facts were presented prematurely. Since the author has a good memory and can develop scenes and characters, the author should allow some of the facts to introduce themselves, not force it through style. The pace and the information were good, just felt a few hick-ups when information was being forced through the characters dialogue, not introduced through the storyline. |

| You called this the prologue. Seems a little long for a prologue these days. I'm getting used to your style now, though it still feels a little over-cooked. I do like the attention you pay to your characters. Very vivid. |

| I was so bored I couldn't get past the tenth line, no offence, haha, but her book is number one, seems to me this competition, as with the conservative New Zealand exclusive literary scene is not based upon the talent or the quality of the writing, rather how many friends you have and how many contacts you can rely upon. Oh oh oh. |

| I am a fan and have been for years, but when she started working on Prisoner, I skipped it. I was so into all her other universes and I wasn't ready for a whole new world. So when it came out on Lulu I snatched it up and reading it straight through in book format was the first I saw of it. I couldn't believe how intriguing it was. There was mystery all about, I never quite understood what was going on until of course the very end. And what an ending! Wow. I was so emotional, but that's not really saying much, I seem to be up and down and all over the place every time I read some of her work. It always becomes very personal and "speaks" to me. So, yeah, slightly biased opinion here, but I wanted to put in my two cents. |

| Haha, the worst thing the internet did was allow anyone to be a critic.
Meg, you know my feelings about Prisoner because I've already written a review. I totally enjoy the guilty pleasure of reading your gay bodice rippers. Also, more adjectives please - the prose is not purple enough. |

| Prisoner is a difficult book to review, purely for the fact that you cant go on the first chapter alone.
In order to enjoy and actually appreciate the story you'll need to read the whole thing from start to finish and not just give up after the first sentence. It's a story that uses much imagination and a complex plot to keep audiences and readers interested and motivated, yet doesn't pick up until the second or third chapter.
I shant pretend that I'm not one of Derr's devoted fans, for indeed I am, but that shouldn't stop anyone from taking my words seriously. Derr is a wonderful fantasy author, who is able to write indepth stories about many different subjects and within many different genres. Prisoner is just one of many stories that show an intelligent and thoughtful outlook on society and human nature. Character personalities are built on and expanded through out the story and a new and exciting world is laid out for you to explore.
Personally, I urge you to give it a read, for although it is not THE best of Derr's work, it is certainly one that is very well written and cleverly described. It has the makings of a true novel, and is certainly leading the way to a new era of published works.
If you dont give this book a chance, then you are certainly missing out. Of course, it is understandable that the genre shant be everyone's cup of tea. I cant stand James Bond films for example, they bore the hell out of me, yet they sell extremely well, the same goes for Prisoner. It deals with certain aspects that I cant see people enjoying, yet I'm sure there are a great deal that will and do enjoy it. Give it a chance at most, it is unfair to fault the style of the author purely because you dont like the subject. Derr's style is fantastic, her stories are great, and I have giving the first chapter and the rest of the story a high rating... it deserves it.
A Must Read. |

| There was nothing about this first chapter that was compelling enough to make me want to read the rest of the book. I thought I would like it, but I just didn't. |

| It just seemed amateurish to me. I agree with AprilStorm. Seemed like a high schooler who needed to meet a minimum word count you so threw in as many descriptive adjectives as possible. |

| This fantasy novel features excellent worldbuilding. Derr creates conflicting cultures that pose a real obstacle to the main couple. In the first chapter she deftly introduces Beraht and Dieter and the reasons why they dislike each other. Of course, the story just keeps getting better and better after the opening. |

| Hi, A message from Bookhabit - As MoonKitsune pointed out (thanks), any selfpublished book that has sold less than 500 copies is eligible to enter the competition. We don't have any proof that more than 500 copies of Prisoner have been sold - the author has confirmed with us that there have been significantly less sales than that. Therefore this book is legitimately in the competition. If anyone has information that proves that more than 500 copies have been sold then please contact us - admin@bookhabit.com |

| If this competition is for unpublished works, and this book's already available in paperback, what's it doing in the competition?? |

| What is it with the colours? Not every noun needs an adjective! Definitely a woman writer. First chapter has a choppy feel to it, the writing would flow better if there were more longer sentences instead of so many short ones. Also feels very much a work of the imagination, as if no real experiences to draw on and bring the situations alive. |

| Intriguing site, this! Must check it out more.
Anyway, I love prisoner, and once I'm done with Fairytales 2 and Sandstorm, it's on my 'to buy' list. But probably on Lulu, though. Which means I can't rate it here? Boo. |

| I had to register to vote for you here. This actually was my least favorite of all your books, but it still drew me in. This was also the book that holds some of your most dimensional characters. They aren't all pretty, but they are all human, with weaknesses and pasts that affect the present. Good job with it. |

| Um, okay, it's kinda annoying that I have to download before I rate, but whatever.
Anyway, I bought the paperback on Lulu, and it was a well-deserved buy. ^__^
The plot was great, and the characters were lovable (except for Dieter's king, the guy is ew, for a good reason).
Basically, I felt that it merited my buying it, and I hope others will rate this book 5/5 just like I did. ^__^ |
