Having lived in England from World War II onwards until retiring to France where I now live in what was Vichy France during the war, that era of history has always held my interest. The effect that hostilities had on families during that period is fascinating. The brief but concise introduction to Elizabeth and her threatened friend Heidi becomes a magnet to discover what the future holds for the two schoolfriends and how their lives could change dramatically. A download is definitely envisaged.

I really enjoyed reading the first chapter and look forward toreading the whole book. I am interested in historical novels, particularly when they are told through the eyes of a family. I need to know what happens to Elizabeth and how the characters cope with the onset of the war. The language of the first chapter is enticing and I will now download the whole book.

Excellent first chapter, a good pace. The author has researched this well! She writes about the thoughts, emotions and interactions of the people during this stressful time, as if she had been there. Easy to read and captures the readers interest from the first few paragraphs. I look forward to following the characters development through the First World War an beyond. Well done!

The interesting start shows a clash of cultures and an adventurous journey for a young sheltered girl who faces a harsh livestyle in a tough country. Definitely makes the reader want to know more about Elizabeth.

This was a great first chapter and I am now downloading the whole book. The set up was fantastic, moving fast enough to engulf you but still at a pace that allowed for detail and character development/attachment.

A very good first chapter. I find myself wishing to be better aquainted with Elizabeth. The author did a marvelous job with the setting. I will most likely find myself wondering what happens to Lizzy and Heidi until I decide to download the entire book.
